NorEaster Storm Ocean City MD – Nov 22, 2006

Ocean City Maryland – NorEaster StormA NorEaster Storm can move sand around very quickly on the seashore. Wind and high wave action, coupled with high tides will create a changed shoreline very quickly. On November 22, the Delmarva Coast was affected by such a NorEasterly storm. High winds out of the North East of high velocity, coupled with high tides bring the realization of it’s power and ability to re-landscape the beach, dunes and cross over’s. This photo was taken mid morning after only a few hours of high winds. Winds gusted to as much as 60 MPH during the evening and throughout the night. I attempted to walk out onto the beach in the early portions of the storm (before it was raining) and the sand blasted my face and body causing me to quickly retreat behind the dune. You can observe in this picture that after only a few hours, the dune walkway path was almot 50 percent full of sand blown there in just a few hours.

NorthEast Storm and Dune Ocean City MdBeach Erosion was significant, but the DUNES HELD and prevented any wave action from crossing over the dunes into the city. Two days later, I ventured back to observe the beach and found the dune crossings totally filled with sand. High wave action had also moved much of the existing beach off shore. It will naturally restore itself by springtime, barring any additional major winter storms. The picture on the left shows the dune walkway crossover totally full of sand on the 24th of Nov after the storm had passed. Ocean City MD and Fenwick Island DE are fortunate to have benefited from periodic beach replenishment to maintain sufficient dune sand and natural grasses, thereby protecting homes and condo’s from damage by Ocean Waves during major storms along the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and the Fenwick Island DE beach area.

In the event of major Hurricanes or NorEaster Storms affecting Ocean City Md and the Delaware Seashore area, you can always check here as we will attempt to post up real time situation reports for the beach reports….
