Ocean City MD J1 visa workers summer of 2007

Summer workers depart Ocean City MD Oct 2007The summer of 2007 is now history in Ocean City MD.. The wonderful international students that arrive every year to boost up and support the local business community in Ocean City Md have now departed for their homelands in Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and so on. Without these students there really wouldn’t be any way a local business restaurant, hotel, fast food, retail, etc.. could staff their facilities during July, August and Sept.. to satisfy the consumer needs.

I’ll just make a few observations from this past summer of 2007.

  • Almost all students go home having had a productive summer and a great experience
  • Almost all students go home having been able to save money to further their education and help their families in their home countries
  • Almost all students who have visited the USA want to return – American is still the Land of Opportunity!
  • The majority of businesses have competent management staff and are able to afford the students a good summer job and treat them with proper respect and consideration. Unfortunately some (a minority) of business owners relegate the management to less than educated or incompetent managers who oversee the student workers. I sure wish there were some way to minimize the number of employers who treat the international students as worker slaves and with disrespect.

Possibly the local community governments, and or local associations, such as Chamber’s of Commerce can find a way to provide and invite ALL business licensees to ensure that their management staff attend a 1/2 day seminar relating to labor laws, employee management, etc.. ?

I have personally witnessed said “employee mistreatment” as related to me by students this past summer. I don’t believe this would have occurred if the worker has been a college student from the USA.. Possibly there is a communication problem, but my take is that there is some “attitude” from a MINORITY of business managers in the treatment of the International Students.

In concluding – the tourist destination cities , while they are endeavoring to help the students who arrive to work, as are many local citizens in the area, may need to consider more effort to help and assist these students upon their arrival and during their stay. Labor and Housing are often issues and in reality many don’t have any recourse from those who may take advantage of them without fair consideration.

    ..
Let us hope we can continue to improve the human consideration, housing situation, employment factors and labor laws, etc.. in our local tourism destination towns and cities to make the experience more profitable for the international students both mentally and financially.
